Contest Categories and Definitions

1. Six Month Sprint (Started in August)
Focus will be on how the 6 month growth affects the appearance of the competitor. Before-and-After contrast is considered.
***If you are a 6 month Sprint competitor and you signed up in August 2015, you will be on the list at the door! You do not need to purchase an entry or competitor ticket!!! Email bryan@austinfacialhairclub.com if you want to double check that you are on the list.

2. Donegal
Focus is on chin strap, Amish, Whaler, Abe Lincoln style beard. No moustache. Shaving of the cheeks and neck is permitted but not required.

3. Goatee
Focus is on goatee, defined as a beard without the sideburns and with the main growth on the chin area. Moustache permitted but not required. Styling aids permitted but not required.

4. Fiercest Chops (Sideburns)
Focus is on mutton chops, sideburns, etc. Moustache permitted but not required. There must be a bald area on the chin that separates the right and left sides of the face. Styling aids permitted but not required.

5. Baby Beard (Beard under 1')
Focus is on natural beard under 1' in length. Styling aids are NOT permitted. There will be a preliminary measurement on site prior to the competition to insure category compliance.

6. Gnarly Man Beard (Beard over 1')
Focus is on natural beard over 1' in length. Styling aids are NOT permitted. There will be a preliminary measurement on site prior to the competition to insure category compliance.

7. Sweetest Natural Stash
Focus is on Natural Moustache shape, clarity and style, as well as how it matches competitors overall look. Focus is on Moustache shape, clarity and style, as well as how it matched competitors overall look. Styling aids are NOT permitted.
*A moustache is the hair that is grown above the upper lip, and not hair that is extending from the cheeks. The boundary between the upper lip and cheek will be considered on a person-to-person basis by the judges.


8. Best Groomed
Focus is on presentable, distinguished full beard and the overall look of the competitor. Historically this is a shorter, groomed beard, though there’s no regulation on length. Styling aids permitted but not required. Shaving the cheeks and neck permitted but not required.

9. Sweetest Styled Stash
Focus is on Moustache shape, clarity and style, as well as how it matches competitors overall look. Styling aids permitted.

10. Full Beard with Styled Stash

11. Freestyle
Anything goes. Competitors with the most outlandish, creative use of real, "live" attached facial hair will receive the most consideration. Styling aids permitted.

*Styling Aids are defined as hairspray, wax, stiffeners, or other styling products. Typically structural aids (wire, pins, etc.) are permitted, but historically not considered "styling aids". Oils or other “everyday” conditioners are not considered styling aids, however, if used in excess, may be considered as such.




F.A.Q.

Q. How will the competition work?
A. Competitors from all categories will be judged from about 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. Saturday. There will be an intermission of about 2 hours. Competition results will be posted for all to see, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will receive their very special award after each category.

After that, we will have a "Classic Misprint-style" competition. Roughly 60 competitors from the day competition will be picked out and entered into the evening competition. A competitor does not need to win or place in the day competition in order to be entered into the evening competition. The evening competition will have a different set of celebrity judges, and a different set of awards.

Classic Misprint Categories are:
1. Sweetest Stash
2. Best Groomed
3. Pompous Partial
4. Gnarliest Beard
5. Ladies
6. Freestyle
7. Best in Show

The regulations per category in the evening competition are made on a person-to-person basis. It is possible that a Ladies competitor can win Gnarliest beard, or that a Goatee competitor can win Best Groomed, etc.


Q. May competitors change categories before the contest?
A. Yes, you may change categories at registration on the day of the contest BEFORE it begins.

Q. Can a competitor enter more than one category?
A. No

Q. Can I register as a competitor on the day of the competition?
A. Yes. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at The Mohawk.

Q. Is the contest at the Mohawk for ages 21 and up only?
A. No, It is all ages.

Q. If I pay to watch the daytime contest, do I have to pay again for the evening competition?
A. No. However your wristband/handstamp from the day event will not guarantee you entry, so please line up early for the evening event.

Q. How many contestants were there last year?
A. Last year there were 211 contestants. There will likely be over 200 this year.

Q. Will AFHC t-shirts and other merchandise be on sale?
A. Yes, we will have our merch and other clubs will be selling stuff as well at The Mohawk.

Q. I won’t have a car while in Austin. How do I get around?
Most of our events are within walking distance of each other. Austin supports Lyft, Uber and has B-cycles and electric assist bicycles for rent as well.
