The 2017 World Beard and Moustache Championships are coming to Austin, Texas Sep. 1–3 at the Long Center for the Performing Arts. The three-day competition, hosted by the Austin Facial Hair Club, will attract beard enthusiasts from around the world including more than 800 competitors and thousands of fans. Every two years, the WBMC showcases the very best in men’s and women’s whiskers and unites beards in a cultural event like no other. Projected to be the largest competition to date, the three-day event will include live entertainment, local food vendors, family friendly activities and dozens of facial hair competitions.

With the World Beard and Moustache Competition coming to Austin in September, the Austin Facial Hair Club would like to prime the pump with the 11th Annual Come and Shave It Competition! We are calling on all pogonologists from across the land to join us on Saturday February 18th at The Mohawk in downtown Austin, Texas. We have festivities planned for the Friday and Sunday before and after the competition, and since this competition is in the evening on Saturday, we have plenty of options for fun during the day. This competition will be limited to 60ish competitors, plus the Six-Month Sprint competitors. All are encouraged to come compete and/or spectate.

Cost for competitors will be $20. All proceeds will go to charity! See link above to register and purchase tickets.

Come celebrate the end of Summer vacation the AFHC way! With the 8th Annual "Beard To School" Party! Saturday August, 27th, 2pm - 6pm at The Brixton. We will be manning the grill and serving up some delicious FREE food! There will be fantastic drink specials from our friends at Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey! Join us for one last hoorah before we all have to go back to the real world.


Official Registration/Sign up for our annual 6 Month Sprint Shave Off... With a twist! Do you know a guy that can grow a fast, mean beard? We've got a chance for them to prove that they can grow 6 months of beard bigger and/or better than anyone else! Our 6 Month Beard Sprint will challenge faces from Austin and all over the Country to put their beard where their mouth is, literally.

Now for the twist! With The World Beard And Moustache Championships just one year away we are adding on a second half to our traditional 6 month sprint. Introducing the Year Long Sprint to Worlds!! Instead of trimming that beautiful new 6 month beard, or switching to a different style, competitors will continue letting it grow for an additional 6 months. Then at World's, they will unveil that bearding milestone, the yeard (year long beard)!

1) Take a picture of your clean shaven self with some sort of reputable date marker on August 27, 2016, and email it to austinfacialhairclub@gmail.com . Local competitors are encouraged to show up in person August 27th at The Brixton from 2pm - 6pm to register in person with the opportunity to have your mug shaved for free by one of the incredible professional barbers from Floyds 99.

2) Submit picture to austinfacialhairclub@gmail.com, along with your name and city, state, and country you are representing.

3) Show up to the Come And Shave It Invitational at The Mohawk, February 2017 to weigh in against the other competitors. (The 6 month/halfway mark).

5) Put your new yeard (year long beard) up against yeards from across the globe at the World Beard and Moustache Championships here in Austin, Texas. September 1-3, 2017 at The Long Center.

The 100+ days are here at last. Time to cool down with that old Austin tradition: a trip down the San Marcos River. What could make such a trip even better you ask? How about floating down the river with all your favorite beards, and our dear friends Lone Star Beer, and Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey!!! That's right, Saturday August 13th come join us at Don's Fish Camp for the tubing adventure of the summer! We've taken care of all the details, all you have to do is buy a ticket and show up!

At 11am a bus from Don's Fish Camp will pick us all up at the Brodie Oaks Shopping Center (park next to The Park Sports Bar and Grille, 4024 S Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78704), and take us to directly to the river! Each ticket holder will receive:
- A custom AFHC tank top.
- Water proof phone case.
- Some sweet Lone Star Beer swag.
- Homemade breakfast taco.
- Complimentary Lone Star Beer and Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey.
- And of course a tube provided by Don's.
After the float, the party continues! A bus will take us back to The Park Sports Bar and Grille where Lone Star Beer will have some specials set up for us!

Join Us in Celebrating One of the Largest Animal Lifesaving Communities in the Nation!


BuildASign.com & Austin Animal Center have come together to organize an event celebrating Austin's fifth year as the nation's largest animal life saving community. The event borrows its name and overall theme from the movie Best in Show, adopting a lighthearted quirky tone that keeps Austin weird. The goal is to raise funds and increase awareness for Austin's nonprofit welfare community and the services it provides. The event kicks off on April 1st with an online fundraising competition where participants can create individual fundraising pages. (Create yours here!) The competition will culminate with a family and pet friendly festival on May 7th at Austin Animal Center!
This festival is free, open to the public and welcomes families and pets alike! The focal point of the festival is a dog show featuring the top online fundraisers, allowing them to further compete with their dogs for titles like Parent-Pup Look-A-Like and Best Trick. Top fundraisers with cats are invited to participate in the cat video competition shown after the dog show. The festival will also include live entertainment, vendors, activity stations and chances to get involved with animal welfare nonprofits from around the city!

Contest Categories and Definitions

1. Six Month Sprint (Started in August)
Focus will be on how the 6 month growth affects the appearance of the competitor. Before-and-After contrast is considered.
***If you are a 6 month Sprint competitor and you signed up in August 2015, you will be on the list at the door! You do not need to purchase an entry or competitor ticket!!! Email bryan@austinfacialhairclub.com if you want to double check that you are on the list.

2. Donegal
Focus is on chin strap, Amish, Whaler, Abe Lincoln style beard. No moustache. Shaving of the cheeks and neck is permitted but not required.

3. Goatee
Focus is on goatee, defined as a beard without the sideburns and with the main growth on the chin area. Moustache permitted but not required. Styling aids permitted but not required.

4. Fiercest Chops (Sideburns)
Focus is on mutton chops, sideburns, etc. Moustache permitted but not required. There must be a bald area on the chin that separates the right and left sides of the face. Styling aids permitted but not required.

5. Baby Beard (Beard under 1')
Focus is on natural beard under 1' in length. Styling aids are NOT permitted. There will be a preliminary measurement on site prior to the competition to insure category compliance.

6. Gnarly Man Beard (Beard over 1')
Focus is on natural beard over 1' in length. Styling aids are NOT permitted. There will be a preliminary measurement on site prior to the competition to insure category compliance.

7. Sweetest Natural Stash
Focus is on Natural Moustache shape, clarity and style, as well as how it matches competitors overall look. Focus is on Moustache shape, clarity and style, as well as how it matched competitors overall look. Styling aids are NOT permitted.
*A moustache is the hair that is grown above the upper lip, and not hair that is extending from the cheeks. The boundary between the upper lip and cheek will be considered on a person-to-person basis by the judges.

8. Best Groomed
Focus is on presentable, distinguished full beard and the overall look of the competitor. Historically this is a shorter, groomed beard, though there’s no regulation on length. Styling aids permitted but not required. Shaving the cheeks and neck permitted but not required.

9. Sweetest Styled Stash
Focus is on Moustache shape, clarity and style, as well as how it matches competitors overall look. Styling aids permitted.

10. Full Beard with Styled Stash
Focus is on a natural unstyled beard with a styled moustache. Styling aids permitted, though focus will be on the styled moustache and the natural unstyled beard. Styling aids permitted.

11. Freestyle
Anything goes. Competitors with the most outlandish, creative use of real, "live" attached facial hair will receive the most consideration. Styling aids permitted.

*Styling Aids are defined as hairspray, wax, stiffeners, or other styling products. Typically structural aids (wire, pins, etc.) are permitted, but historically not considered "styling aids". Oils or other “everyday” conditioners are not considered styling aids, however, if used in excess, may be considered as such.


Q. How will the competition work?
A. Competitors from all categories will be judged from about 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. Saturday. There will be an intermission of about 2 hours. Competition results will be posted for all to see, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will receive their very special award after each category.

After that, we will have a "Classic Misprint-style" competition. Roughly 60 competitors from the day competition will be picked out and entered into the evening competition. A competitor does not need to win or place in the day competition in order to be entered into the evening competition. The evening competition will have a different set of celebrity judges, and a different set of awards.

Classic Misprint Categories are:
1. Sweetest Stash
2. Best Groomed
3. Pompous Partial
4. Gnarliest Beard
5. Ladies
6. Freestyle
7. Best in Show

The regulations per category in the evening competition are made on a person-to-person basis. It is possible that a Ladies competitor can win Gnarliest beard, or that a Goatee competitor can win Best Groomed, etc.

Q. May competitors change categories before the contest?
A. Yes, you may change categories at registration on the day of the contest BEFORE it begins.

Q. Can a competitor enter more than one category?
A. No

Q. Can I register as a competitor on the day of the competition?
A. Yes. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at The Mohawk.

Q. Is the contest at the Mohawk for ages 21 and up only?
A. No, It is all ages.

Q. If I pay to watch the daytime contest, do I have to pay again for the evening competition?
A. No. However your wristband/handstamp from the day event will not guarantee you entry, so please line up early for the evening event.

Q. How many contestants were there last year?
A. Last year there were 211 contestants. There will likely be over 200 this year.

Q. Will AFHC t-shirts and other merchandise be on sale?
A. Yes, we will have our merch and other clubs will be selling stuff as well at The Mohawk.

Q. I won’t have a car while in Austin. How do I get around?
Most of our events are within walking distance of each other. Austin supports Lyft, Uber and has B-cycles and electric assist bicycles for rent as well.

Our bus system is adequate and cheap, but not the best. There is free wifi on the bus, and AC.
